Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Commissioned as Colonel and commander of the 122nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, he rose to brigade command, and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on October 19, 1864 for "gallant and meritorious services in the present campaign before Richmond, Va., and in the Shenandoah Valley". After the war, he served a time as Muskingum County, Ohio Common Pleas Court judge.
