HENRY C. STROOPS DIES AT HOME OF DAUGHTER NOV. 17 Whidby Pioneer Laid to Rest Saturday at Maple Leaf Funeral services for Henry C. Stroops, 73, were held Saturday afternoon at the Oak Harbor Funeral Home chapel, Dr. N. M. Jones officiating. Death occurred after an illness of several months, on November 17 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Owen Conner, in Mason City, where he resided the past five weeks in the hope the climate would benefit him. Stroops was one of Whidbey's pioneers, having come to the Island in 1889. Pallbearers were his fellow brothers in the IOOF lodge, Ed Rose, Walt Taylor, George Dorward, Verne Speer, Lyle Muzzell and George Hansen. They also assisted in graveside rites at the Maple Leaf cemetery. Two of his favorite hymns, "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," and "Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown," were sung by Mrs. Lillian Sheckles.
Henry Clinton Stroops was born in Rushville, ILL., May 10, 1870, and passed away in Mason City Nov 17, 1942, at the age of 72 years, six months and seven days. He came to Washington with his parents in 1889 when the state was in its infancy. He settled on North Whidbey where he worked as a teamster in logging operations for several years. IN 1904 he married Miss Anna Frostad and took up farming as his life's work. He moved to Crescent Harbor two years later and resided there until a few weeks ago. He managed his own farm work until two years ago when a weakened heart condition caused him to lessen his activity, a circumstance that his ambitious nature could never appreciate. He was a quiet unassuming man, and admired and respected by all who knew him. Surviving are his six children, Mrs. Neil Koetje, Mount Vernon, Mrs. Wm. Schenaker, Oak Harbor; Mrs. Gil Haggen, Mrs. Kenneth Wineman, and Laurin Stroops, all of Seattle, and Mrs. Owen Conner of Mason City; also thirteen grandchildren and his mother, Mrs. Anne Stroops, Oak Harbor; besides two sisters and two brothers; Mrs. H. T. Hill and Vince Stroops of Oak Harbor, Mrs Nola Maylor and George Stroops of California.
