A native of Blacksburg and 1927 graduate of VPI, he was a newspaper man for over 40 years, working at the Bristol-Herald Courier, Greensboro Daily News, and the Roanoke Times before moving to the Evening Star in 1944. He began the first newspaper guild local in Greensboro, was a charter member of the American Newspaper Guild in the 1930s, of which he became international vice president. Married Frances Lile McGinnis of Lynchburg, VA in 1933.
