James Edward Bankson, age 79, of Galena, Kan., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, at St. John's Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 10, 1927, to James H. and Rilla (Collins) Bankson, he was a lifetime resident of Galena. James attended the former Joplin Junior College and worked as an inspector at Vicker's Corporation for 22 years, retiring in 1975, due to ill health. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II; he served on the Galena City Council from 1971 to 1983; and was mayor of Galena from 1983 to 1985. He was a school crossing guard for the Galena schools from 1997 to 2003 and a member of the Tennessee Prairie Friends Church family.

On July 1, 1950, he married Hazel Marie Anderson in Galena. She preceded him in death on Oct. 18, 2003.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Rosa Bankson; and a grandson, Kevin Briggs.

He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Briggs and husband, Don, of Carthage, and Connie Smith and husband, Chet, of Galena; one son, Ken Bankson, of Galena; a brother, Howard Lee Bankson and wife, Sharon, of Springfield; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Tennessee Prairie Friends Church, Galena, with Rev. Dave Robinson and Rev. Jeff Martin officiating. Interment will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Galena with Keith Briggs, Jake Doss, Doug Benefiel, Kelly Anderson, Jerry Murry and Keith Duty serving as pallbearers.

Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tennessee Prairie Friends Church Youth Building Fund.
