Al was a member of the 1975 graduating class of Logansport High School. He later enrolled at Ball State University, after losing his eyesight. He found his way around the Muncie campus with the help of his guide dog, Bishop. He graduated summa cum laude.
Al was an avid reader, listening to thousands of audio books that were provided by the Indiana State Library. He also enjoyed listening to music and followed sports.
Always willing to listen, he was an inspiration to many because of his perseverance and demeanor in spite of the debilitating effects of diabetes.
Survivors include his mother and step-father; two brothers and one sister; two step-brothers and one step-sister; and two nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Paul Joseph Umbarger.
