Bess was a school teacher and taught at Colfax Elementary and Cheltenham Elementary school on the Denver West Side. Supposedly, one of her pupils was Golda Meir when she was very young living in Denver. She also taught Doris Finesilver Weinreich, her niece. Bess' sister Nellie Weitz Shwayder was married to Jesse Shwayder of Denver. He was the founder of Samsonite Corporation. Bess Weitz Balaban was the sister of Rabbi Martin M. Weitz (1907-1992). She was the daughter of Joseph and Rachel Weitz.
Bess and her husband Sam were excellent bridge players and would travel to tournaments around the country (Reno, Albuquerque, etc). and would often win trophies playing in either doubles, pairs or single events.
Husband: Samuel Balaban (1898-1986) (M: 7-25-1923)
