Herman is the grandson of Captain John Meek (of Marblehead, Mass. and later Hawaii), and son of Eli and Kahanuulaniokeahi Meek. He first attended school at Ahuimanu, beyond the Pali in Nuuanu, Hawaii where the Catholic mission began what later became St.Louis College, and was among the first to be graduated in Honolulu from St. Louis. He was, both at school and later with the old Hawaii Athletic Club baseball team, Honolulu's star pitcher for many years.

An excellent horseman, Mr. Meek served long as a member of the famous old-time Honolulu mounted patrol squad of the police department. He was later a foot police officer, and traffic officer. He was later connected with the city & county public works department.
