Richmond "Richard" V. Acker, grandson of Revolutionary War Patriot Peter Acker, was a charter member of the Gist Riflemen, Company D, of the Hampton Legion. He was the youngest of 14 children. He was present at the Appomattox surrender April 9, 1865. In January 1866, he married Miss Della Roper and they had 6 sons and 2 daughters. For 52 years he served as Magistrate of his county. "Having served his generation well, he fell asleep in his home at Williamston, SC in the 82nd year of his pilgrimage and his body, dressed in the Confederate gray suit that he loved so well, was tenderly and lovingly laid away..., in the presence of the largest assemblage of people ever seen in Williamston on such an occasion."
