Graveside services will be at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, on Thursday, June 30, 2005, 1:00 p.m. She came to the United States with her parents from Perth Australia and lived in the Hollywood area during her childhood years where her father William O'Brien worked in the motion picture industry.
In 1936 she graduated from the Immaculate Heart High School in Hollywood with honors. She married her high school sweetheart "Gordy McTavish" in December 1941. He died several years later in the war. From 1944 to 1968 she lived in the Marina Del Ray area and worked in motion pictures in casting and the talent development program with Paramount, Janus and Warner Brothers.
She was instrumental in discovering Rock Hudson and James Dean. During this time she met George Stevens , the producer and direct or of many motion pictures such as "Giant", "A Place in the Sun" and "Shane" to name a few. They were married in 1968. He died in 1975
In 1976 she married her long time friend Marty Akeyson, a developer in the Templeton area and a Bechtel Inc. executive. They lived at Hidden Valley in Templeton and traveled extensively with his position with Bechtel. Her most memorable time was three years spent in Saudi Arabia.
Joanie was a long time supporter and contributor of the Foundation of the Performing Arts, the Cal Poly College of Liberal Arts and the Cuesta College Foundation.
