Bran, Joffe did not write that he personally saw the manuscripts, nor that Mileva was co-author. For Joffe's actual words see http://www.esterson.org/Stachel_Joffe.htm There were many original manuscripts in addition to the 1905 relativity paper that Einstein did not keep in his early career. (Source: Albert Einstein Collected Papers.) Einstein's duties at the Patent Office were such that he found time to work on his ideas at times during the day. But he also had the evenings and extra time at weekends, and had been working on ideas associated with the 1905 papers for several years. Isaac Newton also had an annus mirabilis, the year 1666 when he made revolutionary discoveries in calculus, motion, optics and gravitation. In a completely different field, Franz Schubert was working as a schoolteacher in 1815, but still composed 145 songs, two Masses, several other large sacred works, a number of choruses, several piano works, a string quartet, and two symphonies. Were these two other examples physical and statistical impossibilities? Einstein and Mileva, though living together, were estranged from 1912. They separated in 1914. The notion that Mileva produced the general theory of relativity is absurd. Apart from anything else, we have numerous letters in which Einstein exchanged complex mathematical and theoretical ideas on this subject with other eminent physicists in these years. There are no documents of Mileva's in which she wrote any ideas of her own about physics. Letters between the pair show that Einstein wanted a divorce well before 1919, but Mileva was reluctant to allow it. The reason why general relativity was not mentioned in the Nobel award was because it was still controversial at the time. The one specific topic mentioned, the 1905 photoelectric effect paper, was not the subject of his PhD dissertation. Einstein continued to make important contributions to quantum physics and statistical mechanics until well into the 1920s. In any case, by this time he was over forty, and most revolutionary work by physicists is produced when they are young. The "mouth shut" quote was in connection with their private affairs, not physics. Far from Einstein being of "mediocre abilities", the testimony of the most eminent physicists of his day (and since) testifies to the high esteem in which he was (and is) held. When Einstein's general relativity equations predicted an unstable universe it was generally accepted that the universe was stable. Einstein therefore thought that his results were not consistent with the facts as then known, and added the cosmological constant to his equation to allow for this. It was only in 1929 that Hubble discovered the red shift in the light from stars that indicated that the universe was expanding. It was after this that Einstein said that his introduction of the cosmological constant was the biggest blunder of his career. None of this negates the great achievements prior to this time.
