Ruth Violet Parrish was my like my Godmother and a dear friend to me. She was a dear and special lady. Upon the death of my folks only 15 days apart in Dec, 1981, Ruth stepped in to help two shell shocked sisters (myself and my late sister Katie.)
Her friendship and love sustained me early on, and brought me a great deal of joy for the next 21 years.
She could be hard on people like my sister Katie and her son. Ruth was of the old school and with her the old mores and rules of conduct applied. So I listened to her goings on for 21 years .We had lots of fun though She had a wondeful sense of humor .
Ruth was widowed at age 51 or 52 She lived in El Cajon on Millar Ave in a cute little house. She had a little two unit duplex in her back yard and through the years various and sundry characters lived in them. Ruth was a softie with good a heart and never charged the going rate for renting her little one bedroom apartments which she kept in good repair.
With her beloved sister Rosella and good friends Carmen and Ann Smith, Ruth would go to lunch on Tuesdays and visit thrift shops. She loved a good bargin. She never bought much of anything for herself, and saved what she could.
I talked to her every month or so and she would listen to my goings on about my sister and then she would tell me about my sister and her son.
We got together very few years when I came "home" to San Diego from Illinois. We spent many a morning visiting and eating. Afternoons were often spent lunching, shopping and indulging in good conversation till Ruth got tired.
Ruth drove till she was 80 and then tooled arround with Her sis Rosella a dear lady, who was about six years younger.
Ruth died in 2002 at the age of 88. She is burried in the Bible building at Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego Please Check at Office for location
She had told me that she was "ready to go" in 1981 at the age 67, but I am awfully glad she stuck arround so that I could have had the priviledge of knowing and loving her.
