Thomas Eakins was arguably the greatest of all American painters. I just finished the biography "Portrait" by William S. McFeely. Tom was a great and wonderful man, though his life had many disappointments and an unjust betrayal by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.

The whole city of Philadelphia rejoices at the accomplishment of raising $68 million to keep "The Gross Clinic" in Philadelphia, where it belongs. An attempt by a WalMart heir to buy it and move it to Arkansas was thwarted. The newspapers describe you as the greatest American painter, and "The Gross Clinic" as our "Night Watch" ... my favorite, however, by you is "The Swimming Hole".

Three cheers to a true visionary. Thank you for the legacy you left in your art and in your guidance of young artists at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Superb painter! I loved your portrait of the poet Walt Whitman at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia.

I went to see the exhibit of your work at the Metropolitan Museum today. You are still the greatest of American painters and one of the best of the 19th century. For the Gross Clinic, for those marvelously lucid rowing pictures, for all those great portraits that make most other 19th century portraiture look vacuous, for having the courage to stick to your vision despite so much persecution and disappointment, you should stand up in your grave and take a bow: Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

The almost real and life like painting of your wife is my favorite. A fine "Pennsylvania Painter" and Pennsylvanian!
