Admiral, thank you for your leadership and service to our country during our American Civil War. I know President Lincoln used to visit you at the Washington Navy Yard on Sunday Nights for brandy and cigars. Rest in peace, sir.

Admiral John Adolphus Dahlgren is best recalled for his "bottle" shaped cannon for warships, that became the best known of the cannon of the Navy in the American Civil War. As head of Naval ordinance Dahlgren had experimented until he created this excellent gun. During the war he would prove to be luckier than Admiral Samuel Dupont, though not as successful as Farragut or Porter. He replaced Dupont at Charleston, although he turned out to be unsuccessful in conquering that city (but he did tighten the blockade of the city). Later he would succeed in assisting Sherman at Savannah. His career ended up surviving the war, until he died a number of years later. All in all he served the Union cause well.
