Colonel Dahlgren, Your dedication, patriotism and sacrifice stir me. I too am the son of a Navy flag officer, whose sires hailed from New England. I understand your passion and enthusiasm for your father's Navy, but your desire for your own challenges and accomplishments. I too received an Army commission. When I was twenty one I lived just outside the outer defenses of Richmond, in the area where your command clashed with the Richmond Militia. On snowy February evenings I would walk the ground you rode over and remember. Your goal to free the suffering souls on Belle Isle, the 19th century version of Auschwitz, was a noble one. Know that the cause for which you sacraficed your life was achieved. Our nation, the United States of America, lives on to vigorously bear freedom's standard.

To the memory of an exceptionally brave cavalry officer who died in a raid on Richmond, Virginia in January 1864. There is not much more to say about him and his courage except to mention he had been badly wounded in an earlier battle, but willingly took on this raid and it's leadership role without thinking of his disabilities.

Enemy or no, a brave man rates a salute. Sir, you were dealt a very bad hand by your [unknown] superiors, but that's a Soldier's chance. Even granting that civilian officials are proper targets in wartime, the list of those who would have dared order such an operation is very short. Gen. Meade denied to Gen. Lee all prior knowledge, & as an Officer & a Gentleman, I believe him. Your mission had virtually no chance of success, but you bravely followed [probably] lawful orders. Numerous authors give a much fuller accoutnt, but none knows the answer of ultimate responsibility. As a Confederate, I am glad your venture failed, but I am sorry good man had to die. Rest Well, Colonel.
