A large grindstone wheel sits beside this grave. The copper plate covers the center hole through which a drive shaft would have been fitted. Water would have turned a mill wheel to power the shaft, causing the grindstone to turn. Joseph's mill ran by power from one of the streams that feeds the North Fork of the Licking River. This grindstone wheel is in the center of the photo on the main page for this cemetery, and his tombstone is to its immediate left.
A much smaller grindstone, cut from a single piece of flint, rested by the grave as recently as 1995. Vandalism and theft have damaged this remote cemetery which is now more secure. Such stones are frequently placed in yards throughout the region as decoration.
