U.S. Congressman. He attended Mercer University, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1856 and practiced law in Griffin, Georgia. During the Civil War, he served briefly in the Confederate Army and was later solicitor general of the Flint Circuit Court, Michigan. In 1872, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Thomas J. Speer, serving until 1873. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was judge of the Griffin City Court from 1890, until his death at age 64.
