Prime Minister of the Soviet Union. In his early days he trained as an engineer and then spent the early part of his career in this field. He joined the Soviet Communist Party in 1940 and rose through the ranks with the aid of his friendship with future Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. In 1980 he became Prime Minister of the Soviet Union, succeeding Alexey Kosygin, and remained in this position until 1985. Although Tikhonov endorsed Mikhail Gorbachev's rise as new Soviet leader, Gorbachev immediately replaced him as Prime Minister with a younger man. In an interview several years later he regretted his early support for Gorbachev. He also served as the first chairman of the Soviet Peace Committee, which supported anti-war movements in the Western countries, from 1949 to 1979.
