US Navy Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on December 26, 1903 for his actions as a fireman first class with the Navy tug USS Leyden on January 21, 1903. On that date, it was returning from Puerto Rico when it ran aground and sank in a heavy fog near Block Island, Rhode Island. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "Serving on board the U.S.S. Leyden, for heroism at the time of the wreck of that vessel, 21 January 1903."
