EDWARDSVILLE - Six-year-old Evan David Allen loved school, loved the outdoors and was full of life, those who knew him say.
The kindergartner at N.O. Elementary School died Saturday in his Edwardsville home. Authorities still are attempting to determine the cause of his death. The child apparently had not been sick.
"He had a special smile to him that was mischievous," said his paternal grandmother, Vicki Allen of Edwardsville, "He loved school. His graduation was (Monday), and his mom and dad did attend in his place. We're all devastated."
The Madison County Coroner's Office said it is investigating the death and is awaiting the results of testing, which routinely takes several weeks.
Evan was born May 24, 2002, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, son of Nathan and Daven (Hill) Allen. His survivors include, in addition to his mother and father, a younger brother, Noah; his maternal grandparents, David and Debra Hill of Edwardsville; and his paternal grandparents, Terry and Vicki Allen of Edwardsville.
His joys in life, his family said, included wearing superhero costumes, watching "The Grinch" at Christmastime, and Spiderman.
He also reveled in camping at the 20-acre "forest" of his paternal grandfather, Terry Allen, in Brownstown, Ill., where he would ride four-wheelers and dirt bikes and hunt for mushrooms regularly.
"Evan was a wonderful, well-behaved child. He was very attentive in his class," said Tanya Patton, principal of Nelson Elementary School. "Our hearts go out to his family."
Visitation began Tuesday evening at Irwin Chapel in Glen Carbon and will continue today from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. at Metro Community Church in Edwardsville. Burial will take place at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
Memorials may be made to the Make-a-Wish Foundation
