He married Elizabeth Jane Eddy, daughter of Goin and Sarah (Haught) Eddy, on May 5, 1870 in Washington County, Ohio.
Together they had 7 children: Jesse (1872-), Richard Coleman (1873-1936), Martha (1878-1931), Levi (1879-1887), Jackson (1881-1970), William Ray (1886-1852) and Syntha (1891-).
Joseph was a farmer his entire life. First farming in Grandview Township, he would later own a farm in Union Township, Tyler County, West Virginia.
He died at his residence on July 1, 1925, due to Pneumonia. At the time of his death he was survived by 3 sons, a daughter, a sister and a brother. He was proceeded in death by his parents, wife, two sons and a daughter.
He is buried with his wife at Long Reach Cemetery in Tyler County, West Virginia.
