Although Mr. North's death had
been anticipated, actual dissolution,
came as a rude and painful shock
to those who had stood watch at
his bedside for days hoping against
hope that the tragedy of final separation
might be averted, and the news of
his passing will be received with sincere
regret throughout this section
where he was so well known and
where he was recognized as a citizen
of much ability and worth.

Victim of Paralysis.
Mr. North had not been in robust
health for some time past and one
week ago he sustained a paralytic
stroke which was the beginning of
the end. It was at first believed
he might rally but this hope proved
vain. Though he made a gallant and
uncomplaining fight against the inevitable
his weakened constitution
was unable to withstand the shock
and he sank steadily until the final
summons came of a peaceful Sabbath day.
Mr. North was one of the best
known men in McKean county, and
his friends were legion. His activities
as public office holder, attorney and
lodge member brought him into contact
with the great mass of people in
this section and his uniform courtesy,
gentle humor and dignified bearing
endeared him to those privileged to
know him most intimately. He wai
a striking figure among men and a
worker whose usefulness embraced a
wide field of endeavor.
Mr. North was keenly alive to the
needs of his home town and gave
unstintingly of his time and talents to
every worthy public enterprise. He
was untiring in this service and his
wise counsel and aid will be seriously
missed in civic circles.
The lateness of the hour precludes
an adequate sketch of Mr. North's
manifold activities, social, civic and
political connections but the following
gives the principal events of his busy
career:

Short Life Sketch.
Herman H. North was born in Patterson,
Juniata county, Pa., in 1852.
He was educated at Airy View Academy.
Pa., and the College of New.
Jersey at Princeton. He was graduated
from the latter Institution in
1873. A course in the Albany Law
school was completed in 1875 and in
the fall of that year Mr. North ent-
ered the law office of McDonald and
Butler, of Indianapolis Indiana. In
1880 he came to Bradford and engaged
in the oil business, and later res-
umed the practice of law.
Mr. North was united in marriage
in 1881 with Miss Isabel Stewart who
with one son, Jay North of Erie,
survives. He also leaves a granddaughter,
May North of Erie; one brother,
Caleb North; of Washington, D. C. and
one sister, Mrs. Mary Jacobs of
Mifflintown. Pa.
During his residence in this city
Mr. North took an active part in the
political life of the city and the county.
In 1878 he was a member of the
Republican State Committee of Indiana.
In 1890-1891 he was chairman
of the McKean County Republican
Committee. He served as representative
to the State Legislature and as
City Solicitor. In July 1898 he was
appointed postmaster, and served in
that capacity for twelve years, dating
from. September 1, 1895.
Mr. North was elected Mayor of
Bradford, in the non-partisan camp-
aign of 1915. and served four years
in that capacity He was a past master
of Union Lodge, No; 334, F. & A. M.,
a member of the Bradford Board
of Commerce and an active worker
in the Volunteer Firemens associat-
ion. Mr. North was also a member
of Tuna Lodge No. 411, I. O. O. F.,
and of the Maccabees. Funeral
announcement will be made later.

Funeral services, for the Hon. H.
H. North, which were to have been
held today at 3 o'clock; have been
postponed until Thursday morning at
10:30 o'clock. Ren. F. Dean Miller
will officiate. The services both at
the home on Tibbitts avenue, and at
the grave, will be in charge of Trinity
Commandery, Knights, Templar.
Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The Volunteer Firemen's association
will attend the services in a
body on Thursday morning. Yesterday
afternoon the entire police force
of Bradford paid their respects to
their former head.
