Surgeon. He was in Ford's Theater on April 14, 1865 and attended President Abraham Lincoln after he was shot by actor John Wilkes Booth. He was best remembered for taking charge in the aftermath of the assassination, staying with Lincoln until he died and being present at his autopsy. Taft was a surgeon on the battlefield during the Civil War. He was the son of Horatio Nelson Taft, and half sister to Julia Taft Bayne. The Taft's were important people in the lives of the Lincoln's during their time in Washington and the two younger Taft boys, Bud and Holly, were playmates of Willie and Tad Lincoln until Willie's death in 1862.
