Samuel Drown was born March 10, 1796, in Sheffield, Caledonia, VT to Stephen Drown and Sarah Gray.

His grandfather was Samuel Drown (1734-1830) and when they settled in Sheffield, Vermont in the 1770's there was a cemetery named the Samuel Drown cemetery in Wheelock, Caledonia, Vermont-although he is buried in Baptist Hill Cemetery. One account said it was named for this Samuel Drown but was started in 1770 and has since been abandoned with about 75 burials (so it was probably named for the grandfather).

Samuel married first to Mercy Mary Bickford (9-6-1792-6-5-1831) in Vermont, Dec. 7, 1815. Mercy and Samuel had 8 children: Hezekiah B, Stephen, Sarah, Naomi B, Frederick, Mary Ann, Gilbert, and Minerva. Hezekiah and Stephen died young.

After Mercy's death they moved from Sheffield, Vermont to Colebrook, New Hampshire.

It was about this time that he was ordained a Free Will Baptist minister 17 Oct 1831 (just before his second marriage) in New Hampshire and labored for a time in the Wheelock Quarterly Meeting and also in New Hampshire where he was a member of the legislature three years. ~ From the Cyclopedia of Free Will Baptists, pub 1889 & the History of Dodge Co, Wis.

Samuel married second to Deborah Hyland, October 23, 1831 in Colebrook, Coos, New Hampshire when Samuel's oldest was 11 and youngest was a baby.

22 May 1845 he moved from Colebrook to the Wis Territory to Dodge Co. by the waterways, arriving in June 1845. He obtained land, and continued to reside at Beaver Dam until his death. He was treasurer of Dodge Co. in 1847, and connected with the Jefferson QM of FW Baptists, being widely known and respected. He and his wife, Deborah, lived over 50 years in wedlock. Many of his descendants live on in the area and elsewhere.

Samuel and Deborah had two children: Amasa and Mertle "Mertie" Drown.
