She was born in Camp Benning, Georgia, to General William Earl Chambers and Martha Ingram Chambers. She attended Ladycliff College on the Hudson, and the University of Alabama. A member of the Colonial Dames, she was also active in the Altar Guild at both St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Hiram Watson Rainey and Deward C. Brackman; and a daughter, Susan Rainey Vitek.
