Oops! Although Datus lived many years in Iowa, he was in fact born in DeRuyter, New York, along with several of his siblings. The family was part of a religious community (Seventh Day Baptisis) that began in Rhode Island and gradually migrated across the Gt. Lakes and into Wisconsin, Iowa by the 1850s. -

This is to honor our great great great great uncle Datus E. Coon on Memorial Day, 2006. Byron Mcpherson Coon, our grandfather, Janet E. Coon, our mother, myself, my sons, Gavin and Andrew Clark. After the Civil War Datus E. Coon served as consul in Baracoa, Cuba. In Baracoa his wife, Mary Jo and one daughter died of the fever. His other, daughter, Georgie was sent back to Illinois to live with her aunt. Datus died in San Diego of an accidental gunshot. We are grateful to Find A Grave for finding the grave of our ancester and to the biographer. -
