Cecelia Edna Nickels died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007 in her home in Elmira. Edna was born October 1, 1914 in Bryan, Ohio, to Clair Edwin and Mary Magdalena (McCarthy) Bishop.
On July 5, 1933, Cecelia Edna Bishop and Walter Leo Nickels were married in Fort Wayne, Ind. They traveled widely around the US after travel restrictions were raised at the end of World War II; going the southwest, and the central west and midwest. They spend many winters in Florida and two in Texas. They were charter members and helped organize western square dance clubs in Charlevoix, and their hometown of Bryan, Ohio.
Edna was secretary and office manager of her husband's plumbing and heating firm Bryan Sheet Metal Works from 1946 until it was sold in the late 1950's. She then worked for Shaffers Restaurant until Walt's retirement in 1972, as waitress in the restaurant, and then manager and cook of the soft ice cream parlor adjoining the business. Edna was a 4-H leader and home demonstration club member for many years.
In recent years, her social life has been with friends at the Elmira Senior OCCOA dinners, and playing 500 Rummy with her friends, which was the highlight of her week.
Edna is survived by her brother, Louis (Louise) Bishop of Bryan, Ohio; daughter, Dorothy (Donald) Cherry of Elmira; grandchildren, Benjamin Cherry and companion Delyn Eagling of Alanson, Vivian (Ronald) Brown of Jenison, and Virginia (Russell) Aylsworth of Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Kathleen Nowicki of Alpena, Adam, Andrew, and Necole Cherry of Gaylord, Heather Aylsworth of Hawaii, Carrie Aylsworth of Jackson, and Melissa Aylsworth of Tennessee; four great-great-grandchildren, Tyler, Allison, and Landen Cherry, and Hannah Parker, all of Gaylord; and finally her senior center friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and step-mother, Gladys Partee Bishop; her half-brothers, Olin and Leroy Bishop; brothers, Clair Edwin Jr. and Ralph Carlton Bishop; sisters, Anna Partee and Rose Charlotte McGlaughlin; step-brothers, John and Charles Partee; nieces, Joan Cox and Patricia Partee; and nephews, David, Michael, and Larry Bishop.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. until the time of services, Elders Devora Davis and Merle Joles officiating.
Interment will be held in Fairview Cemetery.
