OBITUARY: Dorwin B. Anderson

Dorwin Leonard Boller Anderson, died peacefully at his Troy, Idaho, home Friday evening with his family at his side. He was 89.

Dorwin was born April 30, 1918 in Viola, Idaho, to Naomi and Samuel Boller, who lost his life in France during World War I while Dorwin was an infant.

When he was 2 years of age, his mother married Fay Anderson of Potlatch, Idaho, who took Dorwin in and raised him as a loving son. Growing up on the family farm, Dorwin learned to love cars, music, fishing, and the outdoors.

Acquiring his first car at the ripe old age of 12, Dorwin used to motor himself and his brother, Sherrel, to school. This was more than a passing fancy, as he turned his love for cars into a career as a mechanic, becoming part owner of Troy Motors with Kenneth Whitney Sr.

As a music major in college, Dorwin played violin as part of the University of Idaho Symphony and saxophone for the marching band. He continued to play until his death. Dorwin's college education was cut short as he entered military service in 1941 as part of the 810th Army Air Forces Base Unit. He could talk for hours about his experiences in New Guinea and Australia and his memories of befriending a wallaby.

Upon his returning to Potlatch, Dorwin met and married Helen Schlader on May 12, 1951, in Orofino, Idaho. They built a house and partnered a business in Troy where they raised four children. Aside from his love for his family, Dorwin lived to fish, and fish he did. One could always see him heading off for the Snake River at 4:30 in the morning to hook a few more steelhead or bass at his secret fishing hole.

Dorwin was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Shirley Kees. He is survived by his wife, Helen, brother, Sherrel Anderson; children Jill Martinez of Seattle, Wash., Pattie Soucek of McCall, Idaho, Joe Anderson of Cottonwood, Idaho, Marvin Anderson of Moscow; and grandchildren Kyle and Kara Soucek and Ryan and Mindy Anderson.

Funeral services will be officiated by Father Joseph Schmidt and are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, March 14 at Short's Funeral Chapel of Moscow, with burial to follow at Moscow Cemetery. A lunch will be held at St Mary's Family Center after the service. Visitation will be Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Troy Ambulance fund.
