Author. He was an American author, who was the founder and publisher of the magazine "Popular Mechanics" in 1902. He wanted the publication to fully explore the "mechanics" of how things work. "Popular Mechanics" was the first magazine to present mechanical and scientific material with a popular approach, in language that was easy to understand. Born in a log cabin, he was a son of a preacher. He was educated at Iowa College, graduating in 1884. Starting in 1909, he wrote and published a three-volume text on making 98 pieces of furniture, "Mission Furniture, How to Make It." He was careful not to put his name as the author on his publications. In 1912 he published "Cartoons Magazine" a comic magazine. He had founded and edited at least two other "how-to-do" magazines; both were not as successful as "Popular Mechanics." He married Lina Jackson on June 25, 1889. Upon his sudden death, his 23-year-old son became the magazine's leadership and was very successful. In 1959, the family sold the magazine to Hearst Publishers.
