Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Georgetown, South Carolina, he graduated from the US Military Academy in 1838 and served as a an officer with the Army Corps of Engineers until his resignation in 1848. Returning to his family plantation, he was active in the South Carolina militia when the Civil War began. He joined the Confederate Army and was assigned as a Major in the newly formed Department of South Carolina Engineers. In October 1861, he was promoted Brigadier General in command of the Forth Military District of South Carolina, headquartered in Georgetown. There he strengthened the defense of this district by placing troops in coastal fortifications. In April 1863, Trapier was called to command the garrison located on Sullivans Island and during Union Admiral Samuel DuPonts' naval assault on the city, he held off the Federals and the attack failed. For the rest of the war, he defended the Charleston and Georgetown Districts until the Confederate surrender. After the war, he returned to farming in South Carolina, until his death at age 50.
