Born Hendrikje Dijkstra in Minnertsga, Friesland, Holland, the eldest daughter of Leendert Meinte Dijkstra and Grietje Theunis Norbruis. Wife of Cornelis Pieters Houtsma. Hattie immigrated to America with her father and siblings after her mother died in childbirth with her eleventh child. Sailing from Rotterdam aboard the S.S. Masdam they arrived Feb. 16, 1897, passing through Ellis Island and settling in Orange City, Sioux County, IA. Hattie married Cornelis Pieters (C.P.) Houtsma in Orange City on May 2, 1900. They lived in Orange City until 1913 when they moved to Ocheyedan in Osceola County, IA. They farmed in Ocheyedan until Hattie's death from cancer in 1923. Cornelis and Hattie had nine children: A stillborn son born June 1, 1901; Gertrude born Aug 29, 1902; Peter Cornelius born March 30, 1904; Helen born January 5, 1906; Leendert C. (Leo) born January 9, 1908; Albert born December 6, 1910; Emma born September 8, 1913; Henry born August 6, 1916; and Elmer born October 8, 1920.
