Mr. Bartle came to America when 11 years old along with his uncle Henry Eva in 1833 and settled at Mineral Point, after which they came to Dodgeville that same year. Lived on farm now owned by Henry Prideaux, Sr. Started butchering with his uncle Henry, later formed partnership with Charles Bilkey, Sr. and continued same business. In July 1848 married Nannie T. Grenfell and purchased home in Dodgeville. March 1849 went to California and mined gold- came home on 20 months.Resumed former business of butchering, for three years. He returned in 1854 to California to mine. Stayed 1 1/2 years. Came back to Dodgeville and bought hotel owned by B. Thomas, Sr., which he sold three years later to Jas. Hocking, and again resumed butchering with old partner, Bilkey. After 10 years of this he erected a furniture store on Diagonal Street and later gave up his business to his son Frank Bartle. For several years he was village treasurer and clerk of School Board. In the winter of 1889-1890 he had a heart attack. Lingered in feeble health until death Friday afternoon on January 30th. He leaves behind a wife and six children.
