Harold "Hal" EPPS passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2004 in Houston, Texas. He was born on March 26, 1914 in Athens, Georgia. Hal attended the University of Georgia on a football scholarship, but in his 1st year was picked up by St. Louis Cardinal scouts to play professional baseball. He played for the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Browns, Philadelphia Athletics and The Houston "Buffs". During that time he lead the league with an all time record for triples. Hal was an outstanding center fielder with a career batting average of 300+. His baseball career was interrupted by WWII in which he served with the U.S. Army in the pacific. Hal later retired from ARMCO steel. He leaves his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth, a son Terry, two daughters, Beverly and Connie, a dear cousin, Jack Couch and wife Jamie in Georgia. Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends along with many, many fans. He will be missed and always remembered by those who loved and knew him as a modest man with great integrity. A special thanks for Sarah and VITAS Hospice for their special care. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, August 30, 2004 in the Houston National Cemetery Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to VITA S hospice or charity of your choice.Note from Connie Epps Bond: Harold is the son of Luther Epps and Martha Bertie Couch Epps. He had one sister Lois. All three are buried in Oconee Hill Cemetery, Clarke Co., Athens, GA.Grand parents of Harold Epps are Early Oscar "E O" EPPS and Susan "Sunnie" Hodges EPPS. EO is buried in Mars Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Oconee Co., GA with his second wife Anna Lee Herndon EPPS. Susan Hodges Epps is buried in Bethabara Church Cemetery, Oconee Co., GA. Her tombstone is missing.Grand parents of Harold Epps are Henry Cranford Couch and Sarah Graves Couch (both buried in the Luther Epps plot in Oconee Hill Cemetery, Clarke Co., Athens, GA. Sarah Graves CouchGreat Grand parents of Harold Epps are Thomas North and Cecilia Penelope Jennings EPPS, buried in Mars Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Oconee Co., GA.Great great grand parents of Harold Epps are William and Sarah Alexander EPPS buried on the Epps Bridge Parkway, Clarke Co., Athens, GA.
