PONTOTOC – Hermon Cheney, 79, died Sunday, June 12, 2011, at his home. He was born April 4, 1932, in Pontotoc to Fleetie Bernice Cheney and John Curtis Cheney. He served in the U.S. Army for 11 years and eight months. He fought in the Korean War where his efforts awarded him a Bronze Clip with 3 loops, a Bronze Star, a Korean Service Medal, a U.N. Service Medal and a N.D.S.M. Following his service in the Army, he served as the plant manager for Carnes Frames Inc., for many years. Howard Carnes and his family were very dear friends. Mr. Cheney was a member of the Toccopola Baptist Church, pastored by Bro. Earl Rush. He played the bass guitar during worship service for many years. Music played an integral role throughout his life. He was in many bands and played backup on record recordings for other musicians. He played music all over the U.S. during his travels in life.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Joe Morris and Bro. Tony Pounders officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Ann Cheney of Thaxton; four daughter, Glinda McDuffie of Texas, Debbie Foos of Oklahoma, Tracy Tallant of Pontotoc and Laura Byers of Little Rock, Ark.; eight sons, Tim Cheney of Texas, Mark Cheney of Olive Branch, Eric Jenson of Thaxton, Kip Jenson of Pontotoc, Scott Cheney of Pontotoc, Bryan Cheney of Ft. Bragg, N.C., Brandon Cheney of Pontotoc and Dan Cheney of Ft. Bragg; and 22 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.
Pallbearers will be Dustin Jensen, Justin Jensen, Michael Tallant, Steven Senior, Chris Jensen and Vince Cheney.
Ushers will be Johnny Cheney and David Tyson.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. today.
