HARLINGEN, TX - Manuel Camacho Chavez, passed away peacefully on July 11 at the age of 81. He was born in La Feria, TX to Dioncio and Matilde Camacho Chavez.
In addition to his parents, Chavez was preceded in death by his first wife of 45 years, Maria del Refugio (Ruth) Flores Chavez, four brothers and a sister.
He is survived by his second wife, Dora Trevino Chavez, his children Manuel, Jr. (Sylvia), Jaime (Alice), Bernardo (Stacey), Richard Chavez, daughters Sylvia (Martin) Rodriguez, Elizabeth (Edmund) Tellez and Rebecca Sanders; brothers Melchor (Gloria) Chavez, Gloria (Everardo) Casas, Lupe Chavez and Francisco (Linda) Chavez, 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
After graduating from Harlingen High in 1948, Chavez joined the US Army and served in Japan until his discharge in 1952. He then joined the Harlingen Police Department and attained the rank of Lieutenant of Detectives and attended the FBI National Academy at Quantico, VA in 1964.
In 1966 he served as Assistant Cameron County Juvenile Probation Officer and later as executive director of Valley Boys Ranch and the Harlingen Boys Club which he co-founded. Chavez was then appointed chief of police for the City of Pharr in 1972 and in 1973 he was appointed the first chief of police for the University of Texas at San Antonio where he served until his retirement in 1994.
A devout Catholic, Manny became a member of the Knights of Columbus in 1959 and was advanced to the Fourth Degree in 1988. Sir Knight Manuel C. Chavez served as Faithful Navigator of Bishop Ledvina Assembly No. 1093 (Harlingen), past Grand Knight of Keralum Council 2785 (Harlingen) and of KC Council 7965 (St. Helena, San Antonio), and a member of KC Assembly 2523 in Schertz, Texas. In 1996 the State Deputy of Texas appointed Manny as District Deputy of District 13, encompassing Councils 6856 (Selma), 9291 (San Antonio), and 9681 (Converse).
Chavez selflessly volunteered in various community and professional organizations holding leadership positions in many, including with NE Methodist Hospital, Institute of Texan Cultures, VITA Tax Assistance, Bexar County Election, Harlingen's Immaculate Heart of Mary Parochial School (president), Harlingen Jaycees (president), Texas-New Mexico Association of Police Administrators (president) and International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (regional director).
As president of the Harlingen Jaycees he led his chapter to its first ever selection as the outstanding state chapter in the chapter's population division and several national awards in 1967.
His hobbies included reading, genealogy, computers and playing with his grandchildren. He had a positive attitude, great sense of humor and was an avid Spurs and Cowboys fan, a gifted artist and friend to many. He loved God and serving others.

Visitation will be at Rudy Garza Funeral Home, 1702 E. Harrison St., in Harlingen on Friday, July 13, 2012 from 10:00am to 9:00pm with a rosary at 7:00pm.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Harlingen on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 10:00am. Graveside services with full military honors will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery, 17501 Nacogdoches, San Antonio, TX 78266, at 10:00am on Monday, July 16, 2012 where he will be laid to rest alongside his wife, Ruth.
