She was 29 years old time of her death. Daugther of; Ebenezer & Anna {Criswold} Chesebro. Ariadne was unmarried and a deaf mute. This is Ariadna Chesebro, WSD’s first student. Ariadna’s family moved to Darien from New York, she Ariadna attended the New York Institute for the Deaf and Dumb. Upon arriving in Darien, a woman from Janesville, Wealthy Hawes, herself a graduate from the New York Institute, learned that the Chesebro family had a deaf daughter. Mr. Chesebro enlisted the services of Ms. Hawes and education began at the Chesebro farmhouse. Ironically, Ariadna never graduated from WSD. She fell ill before she graduated and is buried in Delavan’s Spring Grove cemetery. As part of there celebration, the 150th Committee will honor WSD by presenting her with an honorary diploma. The farmhouse is still standing on route 11/14 outside of Delavan! Here is a picture of the old Chesebro home taken in the summer of 2001.
