Daughter of Rev. U.S. and Eva May (Patterson) Smith. She moved from Bloommfield to Washington IA, where she graduated from Washington High School. She graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant where her father was president of the college. She received an M.A. degree from the University of Iowa and taught at Washington, Bedford and Iowa Wesleyan.

She married Edward W. Klopp June 23, 1929 at Fairfield, Iowa. They lived in Des Moines, Marshalltown, Iowa City, Villisca, Monmouth, IL, Oakland, and Grinnell before moving to Correctionville, Iowa, in 1944 where they owned and operated the Klopp Rexall Drugstore for 18 years. In 1962 they moved to Grinnell. She was a member of the Grinell United Methodist Church.
