S/Sgt. Almous C. New (June 29, 1922 - March 11, 1944)
Born in Iago, Texas, the son of Johnnie Joshua and Lalla Beatrice Franks New. After receiving his wings in training at Harlingen, he was assigned to the 451st Bomber Group where he was trained as a left-waist gunner on the B-24 bomber planes. He received additional training at Dyersburg, Tennessee, Orlando, Florida, Wendover Army Base in Utah, and Fairmont Army Air Field in Lincoln, Nebraska. His unit received their oversees orders and left Nebraska in November 1943 with their final destination Italy where their 451st Bomber Group joined the 15th Air Force. Almous flew 12 bombing missions. The 12th mission (March 11, 1944) was a bombing raid on Toulon Harbor, a primary French port on the Mediterranean which was essential to the Germans both to supply Italian troops and for the defense of southern France. His plane was flying lead in the formation. As they approached the coast line for their bombing run, his plane took a direct hit in the bomb bay area from flak fired by German ground gunnery support. Eyewitness accounts from other planes indicated that the plane rolled over on its back and broke apart. None of the 10 crew members survived. The body of Almous was retrieved from the sea by the Germans and buried in a small cemetery in France. At the end of the war and at the request of his parents, his body was returned stateside for burial in the soil of his beloved America.

Reburial services were held in Eagle Lake Thursday afternoon at the Mill Funeral Home for S-Sgt. Almous C. New, with burial in Wharton in the city cemetery. The Rev. L.W. Crouch of Palacios, assisted by Rev. Albert Brown of Eagle Lake officiated. The music was furnished by the First Baptist choir of Eagle Lake and W. Cherry-M. Perry Post 108 American Legion were in charge of the military rites.
Sgt. New was born at Iago, but lived twelve years in the Bonus community and graduated from Crescent high school. He enlisted in the A.A.C. in Sept. 1942, training at Sheppard Field, Texas, Ypsilanti, Mich., and Harlingen, Texas where he received his wings.
He served in England, North Africa and Italy and was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal, District Unit Badge, EAME ribbon and three battle stars. On March 11, 1944 he was killed in action when his B-24 liberator bomber was shot down and crashed into the sea at Toulon Harbor, France. German records found at the close of the war showed that the body was recovered and identified, later be reburied in a U.S. Cemetery in France. S-Sgt. Kent D. Wisdom, escort U.S.A.F., accompanied the body to Eagle Lake, having served in the 15th Air Force with the deceased.
Survivors are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. New, a sister, Miss Melba Lou New, and a brother, Leidon, of Bonus, another sister, Mrs. W.C. Dixon of Alvin, two other brothers, Alton of Lissie and Truitt of Texas City, and three nieces and three nephews.
