Lehi Man Dies, Son Hurt
In Sewer Trench Cave-in
LEHI—A Lehi contractor was fatally injured Wednesday about noon when a sewer trench being dug on West State Street caved in on, him and his son as they sat in the trench eating lunch.
Darrell Adams, 39, 561 E. 2nd S., Lehi, died of a crushed chest. He used his own body in an effort to protect his son, Richard, 17, who was also in the eight foot deep trench, at 294 W. State Street. The youth was listed in "good" condition at the American Fork Hospital where he is being held for X-ray examinations.
The pair were sitting in the trench eating lunch when the east wall of the trench started to fall and trapped them. Mr. Adams shouted to an employee, Paul Thayne, to call the fire department. Workers and spectators in the area worked desperately to uncover the victims until rescue equipment arrived.
The Lehi Fire Department, using the equipment, dug the two out. Mouth-to-mouth respiration was given to Mr. Adams until about 1:30 p. m., when Dr. Guy Richards pronounced him dead.
Mr. Adams was born Jan. 5, 1921, a son of Stephen and Haydee Adams. He had received his education in the Lehi schools and was a member of the LDS church. He was a member of the American Legion.
He was married to Belva West, Pleasant Grove, on April 12, 1943.
Surviving are his widow; mother; three sons, Richard; Douglas, 15; Stephen, 10; two daughters, Jane, 8, and Marian, 5; two brothers, Ralph and Wayne Adams, all of Lehi.
