Born in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland. Educated in Ireland and Rome. Ordained to the priesthood, March 19, 1904, in Rome, for the Diocese of St. Augustine, Florida. Consecrated Bishop of St. Augustine, June 30, 1914. Promoted to the Archdiocese of Baltimore, August 10, 1921. Upon the establishment of the Archdiocese of Washington, he was given the title of Archbishop of Baltimore-Washington, July 22, 1939.
