Life Story by Dorothy (Payton) Grissom - March 1994
While we were at school one day and dad (Willard Payton) was away at work in Illinois, his fourth wife Hattie packed up her trunk and had a neighbor man Willis Spencer to take her to Mount Olive to catch a train. She didn't leave a note. She knew we would go to grandma Caroline Cox and uncle Grover Payton's house as they lived near us. We were still living with them when Marjorie (Dorothy's sister) was making cocoa and of course I wanted to help her. The handle on the tea kettle slipped in her hands and my legs got burned real bad. I still have the scars. I was unable to attend school for a long time. I remember my teacher Cora Clements sending my schoolwork home so I wouldn't get so far behind. She also sent me a winter coat.
Then sometime in the late 20s dad moved us in the Alex Todd house in Mount Olive. There were two grocery stores, a depot and six houses counting ours.
When we all got the flu I remember grandma would walk a long way to bring us hot soup and chocolate pies. She used to carry her check in a pocket in her petticoat when she walked to the grocery store so no one could steal it.
Her and aunt Arley, dad's sister, used to make us a couple of new dresses each year when school started. I was 13 when she died with a heart attack.
