A pilot was killed when his D Model bi-plane crop duster went down in the area of Nicolaus Avenue and Highway 70 in East Nicolaus Monday morning (May 21st).
The pilot has been identified as 50-year-old Nathaniel Alan Brown of Sacramento.
Brown had to be cut out from the tangled pile of metal.
No information was provided on a possible cause of the crash, which occurred about 6:40 a.m., according to the Sutter County Sheriff's Department.
Brown, an experienced pilot, had been with his company (Farm Air) for more than 20 years.
"We've never lost a pilot. It's pretty shocking. We're just sitting here staring at each other," said one co-worker.
The National Transportation Safety Board & FAA will be investigating the cause of the crash.

Nathaniel Alan Brown was many things: a gifted builder, generous brother, roofer, mechanic, craftsman, loyal friend and passionate pilot. But most of all, he was a loving and dedicated husband to Georgette Pierson Brown and the proud father of two boys, Jack Pierson, 6, and Weston Alan, 5.
Born in Decatur, IL, Nathaniel became interested in planes at the age of 2 when watching his father build models of them. It wasn't long before young Nathaniel was building them by himself. As he got older, the planes got bigger and he earned his pilot's license in 1985. Soon after, he began flying crop dusters. Decades later, Nathaniel would still pull his truck over to the side of the road to watch a crop duster flying back and forth over a field. Yet the thrill of flying was only one of the many loves of his life.
Married to his childhood sweetheart, Georgette, for over thirty years, Nathaniel prized her and considered their two boys as the pride of his life. He was a caring and helpful brother to Aaron, Thad and Joe and helped each of them rebuild a number of 1960s classic muscle cars.
Nathaniel was a warm and supportive brother to his sisters Melanne, Julia, Natalia, Camille, Dawn, and Danielle. Nathaniel was a kind and gentle neighbor who was often found fixing many of the neighborhood's leaky faucets and sticky gates. He never accepted payment and was always willing to help any in need.
Nathaniel Brown is survived by his wife, two children, three brothers, six sisters, his parents, David J. and Nancy L. Brown of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, seven nieces, and ten nephews. Nathaniel was 50.
