Portia's father was William Sprague IV. Why isn't that listed? She was a wonderful young woman who was admired by everyone who met her. Nicholas Brewer, the famed artist, adored her and said that of all the people that he met in his travels and those that he painted portraits, he would never forget her. He admired her as one of his dearest friends. She had a very bright and sunny personality and she was educated and very intelligent. Her mother did a wonderful job raising her without any help or financial support from her father. It still amazes me how wonderful those girls turned out, while their father lived well and never supported any of them or Kate. It was a travesty to read how, at Christmas time, he and his new wife would give elaborate Christmas parties to give gifts to other children where they lived, while his own children did without, not only during Christmas but all year around. When Portia wanted to know him, after he had deserted them all with no support, he would only see her, if he didn't have to give her any of his money. That was horrible! Of the girls, Portia favored her mother. Nicholas Brewer said that she was beautiful. I hope that she did find love in her life and that she was happy.
