Otto Matteus (Swedish spelling)Mathew Carlson was the youngest of 10 children born to Nils Carlsson and Bengta Martensdotter of Skane Lan, Sweden.

He immigrated to the U.S. on Mar. 15, 1890 when he was one year old with his parents and siblings . The family settled in Ortonville, Big Stone Co., MN. Approximately nine years later he returned to Sweden with his parents, where he lived until he was fourteen years old. In 1902 his brothers, Charley and John Carlson from Ortonville visited the family in Sweden and convinced Otto to return to the U.S. with them, arriving at Ellis Island on Mar. 21, 1903 on the SSGrosser Kurfurst.

Otto moved to Kandiyohi Township, Bruke Co. ND in 1906 with his sister Emma Carlson Nelson and her family and stay with them . In 1910 Otto was a hired man living with the Eddie Hjort family and later he and his nephew Otto Nelson lived and farmed together in Elmdale Twp. Ward County, ND. On Nov. 10, 1914 He married Mabel Viola Hjort, dau. of Nels and Cecilia Edmunds Hjort of Elmdale Township.

Otto and Mabel lived and farmed in Kandiyohi Township until 1955 when they moved to Kenmare, ND. Otto was an active member of the Niobe Baptist Church were he served as deacon treasurer.
