Gaynell Newton Conn, 94, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the James River Convalescent Center. A native of Emporia, she had been a Peninsula resident for the past 45 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was the treasurer of the Sunday school.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, William H. Newton and John I. Conn; one son, Joseph Charles Newton; and one granddaughter, Billie Lynn Newton Whitaker. She is survived by one son, William H. Newton Jr. of Newport News; three sisters, Mary Elizabeth Everette, Alice Gray Everette and Myrtle Marie Grissom, all of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; five grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; and four great-great- grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at the Weymouth Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, by the Rev. Stephen Crane of Calvary Baptist Church, in Peninsula Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, 4700 Huntington Ave., Newport News, VA 23607.
