TABB - Moira Michelle Thompson, Maj. USAF (Res), 51, a native of Tuskegee, Ala., and a resident of Yorktown for 20 years, passed away April 22, 2012.

Michelle was a librarian for the Poquoson Public Library and volunteered in several areas for her community through Meals-On-Wheels and teaching computer classes for the York County Senior Center. She graduated Cum Laude from Auburn University and served for 11 years attaining the rank of Major (Res) in the U. S. Air Force. Michelle received numerous awards and decorations to include Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal.

Michelle was the first woman to serve on a Minuteman II missile crew. She was selected to represent her unit in an interview on national television by David Hartman. She was also a four year colon cancer survivor. Michelle was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, and aunt. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and our community and remembered forever as being "larger than life."

Michelle is preceded in death by her father, William T. McCain Jr., LTC USA (Ret.).

She is survived by her beloved husband of 24 years, Larry Wayne Thompson; daughter, Caitlin Nicole Thompson; stepson, Larry Wayne Thompson II; mother, Carolyn McCain; brother, Shawn Michael McCain and wife, Jeannie; sister, Kim McCain; niece, Anna McCain; nephew, Daniel McCain; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, with military honors.
