HELEN MARIE AARHUS
May 16, 1913 ~ March 15, 2012

Helen Marie Aarhus went home to be with her Lord on March 15, 2012, surrounded by her loving family who sang her into heaven. She joyfully stepped into the presence of Jesus Christ between the third and fourth verses of Amazing Grace. She lived a full and meaningful life, the devoted matriarch of a family who adored her.

Helen was born May 16, 1913, in Rock Port, Missouri to Reverend John Hinchsliff and Verna Bell Miller Hinchsliff. After Helen's birth at her grandmother's home, her parents returned to their sod house in western Kansas. The family of six had no running water, indoor plumbing, or electricity until they moved to Washington in 1939.

Helen became a teacher, graduating from Miltonvale Wesleyan College in 1932. She taught for seventeen years in one-room school houses throughout the Midwest and then private schools in Vancouver, Washington, where she also served as principal of the Clark County Christian School in Vancouver.

In 1939, Helen moved with her parents from Kansas to the Pacific Northwest. She met a handsome, young pastor, Henry Aarhus, who was a gifted musician. The two began singing duets together at Christian conferences and youth conventions, eventually marrying on August 18, 1942. The following year, twin sons, James and John, were born, bringing a lifetime of joy and gratitude to the couple.

Helen and Henry served the Lord together for forty-seven years before Henry passed away in 1989. She remained the devoted mother to James and John Aarhus, and the gracious mother-in-law to Linda and Tanya. Helen was a wonderful, loving grandma to Lynelle Garrison, Deanna Duncan, Jimmy Aarhus, Johnny Aarhus, and Krystal Kennard. She thoroughly enjoyed her nineteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A service for Helen Aarhus was held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens on Friday, March 23, 2012 followed by a reception. Her final resting place is next to her husband, Henry, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vancouver, Washington.
