US Senator. Born the nephew of Florida Governor Richard K. Call and cousin of Arkansas Senator James D. Walker, he relocated to Florida, with his parents in the late 1830s. He attended various schools, studied law, was admitted to the bar, practiced law from the (1850-61) and served as an adjutant general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was elected to the United States Senate, in late 1865, but was not permitted to take the seat like many other Confederate leaders. Thus he was a member of the Democratic National Executive Committee and practiced law in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1897. After leaving from the United States Senate, he lived in retirement until his death at age 76.
