On our school gymnasium wall was written: "For when the One Great Scorer comes To write against your name, He writes not that you won or lost, But how you played the Game." (from your poem "Alumnus Football"). The school in Paton, Iowa was torn down, but I attended there up until 1964, and I still can say this poem word-for-word. What an impact you had on so many lives that you never even knew...Paton children as well as every competitor who played there, plus more! Thank you.

With limitless gratitude for the inspiration you so freely contributed to the generations before me, then, to each succeeding generation, the least I can do is decorate your interactive grave site with a "Forget Me Not". With humble appreciation, may pray your work endure until the last ticking of the clock of time and with that, may your words continue to inspire student and professional athletes toward a more proficient and responsible career of becoming true positive role models for the youth of America and the world.

I've heard "Game Called" summarized so many times in my life as "It's not weather you win or lose, but how you play the game!" Thanks!

"Game Called. Upon the field of life.
The darkness gathers far and wide,
the dream is done, the score is spun,
that stands forever in the guide.
Nor victory, nor yet defeat,
is chalked against the players name.
But down the roll, the final scroll,
shows only, how he played the game."

Thank you, Mr. Rice.

As a fan who has enjoyed your writing, "Game Called" is one of my favorite pieces. Today's so-called sportswriters could learn from you. R.I.P.

"Outlined against a blue-grey October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again." Who writes sports with such eloquence today? Not very many!
