Fern Miracle, born Fern Sylvia White, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the age of 92 at Grace Assisted Living.

Fern was born August 21, 1919 in Fort Pierre, South Dakota. She was born the oldest of three girls to Ida and Dale White. She grew up on a farm in Florence, South Dakota. She attended Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, South Dakota and graduated with a four year Bachelor of Science in education in 1944. After graduating, she returned home shortly before a tornado destroyed the family farm.

She enlisted in the Women's Army Corp (WAC) shortly afterward on July 8, 1944 as a Medical Technician and General Clerk. After serving in the WAC, she returned to college and obtained her Masters Degree in Education at the University of Colorado in Boulder through the GI Bill.

She applied for teaching jobs after the war and was selected for teaching positions, first in Wyoming then in Fairfield, Idaho. She loved to teach and was very strict, according to many of her students. There she met her future husband, Harlan Miracle, a principal at the same school, and was married May 23, 1948 in a Methodist church in Buhl, Idaho where his parents lived.

She said she got to know him because he roomed in the same dormitory and he was the only one that had a car. Their first date was when he took her shopping. To this union was born four boys, each two years apart, Dale, Dennis, Lynn and Vey.

Fern had tremendous challenges in her early years of marriage raising their boys, as her husband suffered from health problems that kept him in the hospital for long periods. Despite all the challenges, her strong will and determination got her through the rough times. They were able to buy a home with two acres of land on which they raised a big garden, hogs, and cows in order to survive in hard economic times. She loved that home and the memories it provided. She lived there for 55 years, most of the rest of her life.

After raising their children, Fern became active in the Mountain View Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She formed friendships in those organizations that lasted many years.

She is survived by her two sisters, Shirley Dezotell (Mesa, AZ) and Ramona Ustrud (Watertown, SD); four sons, Dale Miracle, wife Barbara (Boise, ID), Dennis Miracle, wife Karen (Boise, ID), Lynn Miracle (Fruitland, ID), and Vey Miracle, wife Julie (Wheaton, IL). Fern also is survived by three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, Matt Miracle, wife Maria, children Mark and Megan; Becky Miracle, and Brian Miracle.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents, Ida and Dale White, and her husband, Harlan Miracle.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Friday, March 16, 2012 at Cloverdale Funeral Home, 1200 N. Cloverdale Road in Boise, with a funeral service starting at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow the service at Cloverdale Memorial Park. A reception will follow the graveside service at the Cloverdale Funeral Home Reception Center.

Flowers can be sent to Cloverdale Funeral Home. If a donation is preferred, it may be made to the Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarship Fund.
