Third of four sons born to Scotsman James Thomson, paper manufacturer, and his American wife Elizabeth McCoy.

In 1868 the family moved to Windsor Mills, Quebec, where his uncle John was managing a paper mill and then settled in Newburgh, Ontario, where his father and uncle established three additional paper mills. Strathcona is still in operation.

George followed his father into the paper making profession, then met and married Anna Jocerica Hooper in 1887.

He died at age 68 in Victoria Hospital.
